To set a pick-up time in Stirling, work backwards from your departure time. Take the time the airport or airline wants you there, add the drive at that time of day, then add 20 to 30 minutes' contingency. For a 07:30 short-haul flight from Edinburgh, that means leaving Stirling at about 04:30.
Step 1: decide when to be at the airport
Glasgow Airport tells passengers to check with their airline first. Its general rule is to arrive 2 hours before a UK domestic flight, 3 hours before a European flight and 4 hours before a long-haul flight.
Edinburgh Airport's advice is to arrive in time for your airline's check-in desk to open, and not much earlier, because you can't drop bags before then. On its published list, last updated in April 2025, easyJet, Ryanair and Loganair open their desks 2 hours before departure, British Airways 2 hours 15 minutes before and Jet2 at least 3 hours before. Long-haul airlines such as Emirates and Virgin Atlantic open 4 hours before.
Step 2: check the bag-drop cut-off
The cut-off is the point when your airline stops accepting hold bags, and it is worth treating as a hard deadline. On Edinburgh Airport's list, Ryanair, KLM and Loganair close their desks 40 minutes before departure, Jet2 45 minutes before, easyJet 50 minutes before, and British Airways and Emirates an hour before. The airport notes that airlines can change these times at short notice.
Ryanair is moving its cut-off from 40 to 60 minutes before departure at all its airports from 10 November 2026. If you are flying Ryanair with a hold bag after that date, plan around the earlier deadline.
Step 3: allow for the drive at that hour
These are Google Maps typical drive times from Stirling railway station on a weekday in September 2026:
- To Edinburgh Airport, via the M9: 30 to 40 minutes before 06:00, 35 to 55 minutes around 07:30 to 08:00, and 30 to 45 minutes around 10:00.
- To Glasgow Airport, via the M80 and M8: 40 to 50 minutes before 06:00, 45 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes around 07:30 to 08:00, and 55 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes around 17:00.
Glasgow is the less predictable drive at rush hour because the route runs through the city on the M8. If you start outside Stirling, in Dunblane, Bridge of Allan or Callander for example, add the extra distance.
Step 4: add contingency
Add 20 minutes when the roads are quiet and 30 minutes when you will be driving in the weekday rush. That covers a late start, a diversion, a slow stretch of motorway or a queue at the drop-off zone.
Worked examples
The short-haul examples use 2 hours at the airport. The Edinburgh long-haul example uses 3 hours, and the Glasgow examples follow the airport's general rule. Each drive figure sits at the top of the typical range, erring on the slow side around rush hour.
| Flight | Airport and flight type | Be at the airport by | Drive allowed | Contingency | Pick-up in Stirling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 06:00 | Edinburgh, short-haul | 04:00 | 40 minutes | 20 minutes | 03:00 |
| 07:30 | Edinburgh, short-haul | 05:30 | 40 minutes | 20 minutes | 04:30 |
| 10:00 | Edinburgh, short-haul | 08:00 | 55 minutes | 30 minutes | 06:35 |
| 14:00 | Edinburgh, long-haul | 11:00 | 45 minutes | 20 minutes | 09:55 |
| 06:30 | Glasgow, UK domestic | 04:30 | 50 minutes | 20 minutes | 03:20 |
| 11:00 | Glasgow, European | 08:00 | 1 hour 5 minutes | 30 minutes | 06:25 |
To check the maths on the 10:00 Edinburgh flight: 2 hours before departure is 08:00. Take off 55 minutes for rush-hour traffic and you reach 07:05, then 30 minutes' contingency gives a 06:35 pick-up.
Two adjustments to keep in mind:
- If your long-haul airline opens its desks 4 hours before departure, as Emirates and Virgin Atlantic do at Edinburgh, and you want to be there when they open, move that pick-up an hour earlier.
- If the 11:00 Glasgow flight is within the UK, the 2-hour rule applies. Allow 1 hour 10 minutes for rush-hour traffic plus 30 minutes' contingency, and the pick-up becomes 07:20.
When to add more time
- You are checking in bags during school holidays or other busy periods, when queues are longer.
- You need special assistance, are travelling with young children or have bulky items such as sports equipment.
- You are flying Ryanair with a hold bag on or after 10 November 2026.
- There are roadworks or closures on your route. Check the night before an early start.
